Even the setbacks of the Activision franchise are a commercial success

After the rise of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 in 2009, the Activision franchise became a commercial juggernaut and has not left the top since then. Of course, not everything has been perfect, and some installments were disappointing or not entirely to the fans' liking. However, even in that aspect, the IP plays at another level because it was recently revealed that one of its worst releases sold over 30 million copies.

Former employee reveals that Call of Duty: Vanguard sold over 30 million copies

According to a report by Exputer, Call of Duty: Vanguard's negative reception did not prevent it from achieving a good commercial result because it ultimately sold over 30 million copies, a figure that most games on the market would envy. This information comes from the LinkedIn profile of Brian Hong, who was the social media strategist for Call of Duty: Vanguard, where he mentioned that the game sold such a quantity, surprising the community as the title is considered among the worst ever released in the franchise's history.

What happened with Call of Duty: Vanguard?

Call of Duty: Vanguard debuted in 2021 and was developed by Sledgehammer Games. Its concept and content took us back to World War II, covering battles in the Pacific, Europe, and Africa, but the final result divided opinions as the franchise seemed to be experiencing a new period of stagnation, despite being integrated with the Battle Royale proposal of Warzone and serving as the foundation for the online platform we enjoy today.

Additionally, Call of Duty: Vanguard was marked by controversy as the Activision logo and all references to the publishing company were removed from promotional materials due to scandals of harassment and violence revealed by employees.

During its active commercial period, Activision concluded that Call of Duty: Vanguard did not meet sales expectations, but this did not mean that the title was forgotten, as everything indicates it quietly continued to accumulate sales until surpassing 30 million.
