Xbox gets slammed over controversial post about graphics in video games

The debate sparked by the news about Hellblade II reached Microsoft's brand.

The recent developments of Senua's Saga: Hellblade II confirmed that it will run at 30 frames per second on Xbox Series X|S, news that didn't sit well with some users and fans of the brand. They believe that exclusive games within the ecosystem should fully utilize the hardware's power, as indicated by each console's respective boxes and promotional materials. The debate about gameplay, graphics, and respect for creative vision ignited on social media, and Xbox fueled the fire with a controversial post.

Xbox ignites controversy with post

The official Xbox account on Twitter sparked controversy with a post stating that "how a game plays > how a game looks", suggesting that gameplay is better and more important than graphical fidelity. While it's true that a game's essence lies in its design and mechanics as a creative work, gameplay-wise, it's also true that its visual aspect holds significant importance from a holistic perspective.

Some responses to Xbox's post pointed out that it's not right for the brand to turn it into a decision for players. Finding a balance is crucial, as highlighted by Mike Ybarra, former Xbox executive and ex-head of Blizzard. Additionally, journalist Tom Warren sarcastically remarked that 60 frames per second is better than 30 frames per second, while the Charlie Intel account specializing in Call of Duty mentioned that it would be best if both aspects were on par.

On the other hand, some Xbox users wrote to Xbox stating that this discourse may serve casual players, but not those who invested in a powerful console like Xbox Series X. From their perspective, the minimum expectation should include 2 visual modes, one focusing on performance and frame rate and the other on graphics.
