Players lashed out against Mike Ybarra's idea

Consuming and making video games is not cheap. Production costs are getting higher and higher, which translates into higher priced titles. Mike Ybarra, former president of Blizzard, knows that this impacts developers and their creative work, so he proposed an alternative that did not please gamers.

The developer stated that he would love to be able to tip the studios, as he sometimes feels that the $70 USD he paid for a great title is too little compared to the experience he had. The idea was not to the liking of gamers, who criticized the manager.

Mike Ybarra generates controversy by suggesting a tipping system

"When I beat a game, there are some that just leave me in awe of how amazing the experience was. At the end of the game, I've often thought 'I wish I could give these folks another $10 or $20 because it was worth more than my initial $70 and they didn't try to nickel and dime me every second,'" Mike Ybarra stated.

The former Blizzard executive referred to great experiences such as Horizon Zero Dawn, God of War, Red Dead Redemption 2, Baldur's Gate 3 and ELDEN RING. To avoid criticism, he emphasized that paying $70 USD for a game is complicated and not affordable for everyone. However, he believes that a tipping system would be great, as players could show their appreciation to the developers.

"I know $70 is already a lot, but it's an option at the end of the game I wish I had at times. Some games are that special," the manager added.

As he predicted, the community was not at all happy with his idea, so multiple players criticized him for his proposal. Many said that games are already expensive entertainment and that a tipping system would not be appropriate.

Not only was the manager criticized, but some gamers agreed with Ybarra because they believe that some games provide a lifetime experience and consider that this does not have a price tag. Because of this, they would be willing to tip the studios.
