Xbox to Have VR Device? Meta Quest Makes It Possible

Meta Announces Updates to Its Virtual Reality Strategy

While virtual reality technology hasn't seen the expected success in gaming and other sectors, it remains an option for a niche market that keeps the business afloat and future expectations alive. Meta continues to support its virtual reality division and understands the importance of collaboration with other companies, so much so that they announced a new partnership with Microsoft and Xbox.

Meta to Collaborate with Xbox for a Limited Edition Meta Quest

In a statement, Meta announced the release of the Meta Horizon OS mixed reality operating system to third-party companies to build a virtual reality development and application ecosystem. "We are working with the world's leading technology companies to bring this new ecosystem to life and further facilitate developers in creating applications and reaching their audiences on the platform," the company says in this new era of its virtual reality business.

Meta reports that it will work with ASUS and Lenovo, but the standout announcement is their deepening relationship with Xbox as they plan to design a Meta Quest inspired by Microsoft's gaming brand and focused on the gaming ecosystem experience: "Xbox and Meta joined forces last year to bring Xbox Cloud Gaming (Beta) to Meta Quest, allowing people to play Xbox games on a large 2D virtual screen in mixed reality. Now, we are working together again to create a limited edition Meta Quest, inspired by Xbox."

Meta and Xbox recently collaborated to bring Xbox Game Pass and Xbox Cloud to Meta Quest through an official app that displays a screen on the mixed reality headset from which users can play Microsoft's available catalog. The next step will likely be a Meta Quest with a special Xbox design that may have specific features.

Meanwhile, Xbox has been elusive regarding virtual reality proposals, as the overall business hasn't yielded the expected results and there's no specific interest in Microsoft's gaming division. However, Xbox's presence in the sector could go hand in hand with the availability of its ecosystem on different platforms, with Meta Quest and its augmented reality ecosystem being one of them.
