Nintendo Switch has sold over 140 million units and would surpass a legendary console this year

After the confirmation of a new console, Nintendo still has high expectations for its current system.

The Nintendo Switch may be in the late stage of its life cycle, but it continues to sell millions and millions of units. In fact, its sales momentum is such that Nintendo has faith in it and believes that within less than 1 year, it will surpass the sales of its best-selling console of all time.

Thanks to the latest financial report from Nintendo, we know that their current console, the Nintendo Switch, in the 3 months following the last report, managed to sell almost 10 million more units, bringing the console to the milestone of 141.32 million systems sold worldwide (as of March 31, 2024).

This is noteworthy because now there are only 12.7 million units separating the Nintendo Switch from the Nintendo DS, the company's best-selling console, with 154.02 million units sold.

What's interesting is that Nintendo estimates it will sell 13.5 million more units in the current fiscal year, meaning that the Nintendo Switch should surpass the Nintendo DS by selling a total of 154.82 million units before April 1, 2025.

Will the Nintendo Switch run out of steam?

The above is notable because Nintendo expects to sell more consoles than last fiscal year (15.70 million), when there were major exclusive releases like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom and Super Mario Bros. Wonder; in contrast, 2024 doesn't seem to have games of such caliber.

However, while the Nintendo Switch is clearly in the final phase of its life cycle, the truth is that it still has major releases in store, such as Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Luigi's Mansion 2 HD, Pokémon Legends: ZA, or even the excessively delayed Metroid Prime 4.

Furthermore, Nintendo has just confirmed that they are preparing a presentation for June, in which they will reveal games coming to the Nintendo Switch in the coming months, which will undoubtedly help achieve the sales goal.

Interestingly, while the handheld console from 2005 is ahead in terms of units sold, it "only" managed to sell just under 949 million games compared to almost 1236 million for the Nintendo Switch, showing that the hybrid system has recorded more game sales per user in Nintendo's history.
