Neil Druckmann: AI will revolutionize game development

The co-creator of The Last of Us shares the pros of implementing this technology

The use of intelligent AI tools has been incorporated into video games in recent years, but it was a topic that remained discreet until the rise of this technology, and some leaks confirmed that they are part of the development processes. Today, present and future plans include its use to benefit the creation of video games, and recently Neil Druckmann spoke about it.

Neil Druckmann believes anyone will be able to make a video game thanks to AI

During his participation in Sony's Creative Entertainment Vision event (via VGC), Neil Druckmann, co-creator of The Last of Us, spoke about the implementation of AI tools in video game creation and the benefits they will bring to processes and the medium itself. According to the creative, AI will revolutionize video games as it will allow for proper cohesion between technology and narrative, as well as simplifying processes and making them easier so anyone can materialize an idea without technical expertise.

In this regard, the creative and Naughty Dog executive mentioned: "We are seeing this exciting marriage of cutting-edge technology with traditional storytelling that is pushing us towards a future where enhanced fidelity is not just about achieving realism, but about expanding the spectrum from highly stylized to ultra-realistic imagery. This broadening of possibilities is driven by increasingly accessible tools that allow even those without technical knowledge to use their imagination and create worlds and narratives at their whim. AI is really going to revolutionize the way content is created, although it poses some ethical issues that we must address."

Subsequently, Neil Druckmann pointed out that AI will save time and reduce development costs as there are tools like motion capture that can be done without traditional procedures, something that is already seen in sports games that take video from real matches and transform them into elements for a video game: "with technologies like AI and the ability to perform motion capture from home, we are reducing both costs and technical obstacles, which opens the door for us to undertake more adventurous projects and expand the boundaries of storytelling in games. This evolution is really empowering creators to bring their visions to life without traditional obstacles."

What do you think about the arrival of AI in video games? Will it be used to drive creativity or to save every last penny to maximize profits?
