Crimson Desert: Did PlayStation Try to Secure Exclusivity? Pearl Abyss Responds to Reports and Talks About Release Date

Por Ulises Contreras el 23 de October de 2024

Crimson Desert stunned fans with its initial reveal, thanks to its impressive visuals. Although its release still seems far off, more details are gradually coming to light. This week, the game became the subject of discussion after reports emerged that Sony attempted to secure an exclusivity deal.

It’s important to remember that this new single-player RPG is being developed by Pearl Abyss, the South Korean studio behind the popular Black Desert Online. The game was first revealed in 2020 and reappeared at this year’s Gamescom with a new trailer showcasing its combat system and fantasy world.

As fans await more information on its release date, recent reports indicate that Sony approached the company, attempting to secure PS5 exclusivity. The developer addressed these reports, though they remained somewhat vague.

Pearl Abyss, Developer of Crimson Desert, Talks About the PS5 Exclusivity Deal

Details of the deal were shared during Pearl Abysss latest financial report. According to the information, PlayStation offered marketing control and unique incentives if the South Korean studio accepted the offer. This also included a one-year timed exclusivity for PS5.

However, reports claim that the company behind Crimson Desert declined Sony’s offer after calculating the projected sales, realizing that self-publishing would be more profitable. As it stands, the game is set to launch simultaneously on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.

With some uncertainty still surrounding the situation, Pearl Abyss released a statement addressing the reports. Although they didn’t share many details and avoided commenting directly on the alleged PlayStation exclusivity offer, they did confirm discussions with potential publishing partners.

Sony tried to make Crimson Desert a PlayStation 5 exclusive

“In the presentation of last quarter’s results, we revealed that we would be self-publishing Crimson Desert. Of course, we respect and value our business partners, with whom we remain in constant contact regarding our progress and plans, and we discuss various forms of collaboration with them,” the company told Eurogamer.

Lastly, Pearl Abyss confirmed that they have not yet shared the release date for Crimson Desert, stating that “any articles on the subject are mere speculation at this point.” They promised, however, to showcase a playable version of the game during a press event in Paris this week.
