Despite its rocky launch, Cyberpunk 2077 became a massive success for CD Projekt and is now considered one of the best games of the modern era. With over 30 million copies sold, the next logical step is the sequel, which the Polish company confirmed last year is already in development. As part of its recent financial report, CDPR shared an update on the state of the project — and overall, the news is good.

Cyberpunk 2 continues to move forward, but it won’t arrive before 2028
CDPR revealed new information about its projects currently in development. One of them is Cyberpunk 2, the sequel to the 2020 release, which is still in the early stages of its creative process.
According to the company, this project is being developed jointly by the Poland and Boston studios, though there’s greater involvement from the North American team. Why? The goal is to ensure the game better reflects U.S. culture and the social elements that will shape this dystopian world.
The studio also revealed that the team size increased from 116 to 135 employees. This is part of a planned progression that will require more manpower as development advances. CDPR stated that it expects to significantly expand the Cyberpunk 2 workforce throughout 2026 and 2027, when the project enters its most complex and important creative phases.
In fact, CDPR estimates that by 2027, up to 400 developers could be working on the sequel.
Finally, the company confirmed that Cyberpunk 2 will not release before 2028, meaning we are still more than two years away from even knowing its release window.

A dystopian version of Chicago
As part of the report, CDPR reaffirmed that Cyberpunk 2 will take place in a dystopian city inspired by Chicago. As Mike Pondsmith — creator of the original tabletop RPG — previously said, it will be a city where everything went wrong: a futuristic disaster.
Although no additional locations were confirmed, rumors suggest that Night City may also appear in the sequel. The setting of the first game and the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime remains a fan-favorite.
Cyberpunk 2077 has now sold 35 million copies, and its long-term success is seen as the result of CD Projekt RED’s commitment to fixing the disastrous launch back in December 2020.
