Dota 2 is one of the most popular competitive games in the world. Its popularity comes with consequences, one of which is the prevalence of smurf accounts used by experienced players to dominate lower-level individuals. This is a problem that affects the competitive scene, and Valve is stepping in.
Valve has announced its readiness to combat smurf accounts and the main accounts of those who use them. According to the company, they have recently permanently banned 90,000 smurf accounts in Dota 2 and plan to take action against main accounts if they continue this behavior.
"Today, we have permanently banned 90,000 smurf accounts that have been active over the past few months. Smurf accounts are alternative accounts used by players to avoid playing at the correct MMR, abandon matches, cheat, harass, or be toxic in any other way without consequences," said Valve.
"Furthermore, we have traced each of these smurf accounts back to their main account. Going forward, if a main account is found to be associated with a smurf account, this may result in a wide range of penalties, from temporary behavior score adjustments to permanent bans," concluded the developer.
Valve states that it is taking these measures because Dota 2 is a game that is enjoyed the most when played on a level playing field. Therefore, it is taking actions to ensure that genuine players matches are as enjoyable as possible while making the experience a nightmare for those who use smurf accounts.
