PlayStation fans have been waiting for years for a remake of God of War. Fans of the franchise agree that the Greek saga has something unique and that it would be worth bringing back with modern improvements. However, the celebrations for the series’ 20th anniversary were disappointing. Because of this, one player decided to make a remake of the first God of War to send a message to PlayStation and Sony.

Alifilmworx, a player and content creator, showcased his passion for the Greek saga through a project he worked on for more than half a year. His goal was to demonstrate the potential of a remake of the first God of War for PlayStation 5. He recreated the iconic scene where Kratos faces the dangerous Hydra—with excellent results. So much so that the community asked PlayStation and Sony to make the project a reality.

Fan-made God of War remake leaves PlayStation players stunned

Rumors have circulated for months about the return of the Greek saga through remakes or remasters. The franchise’s 20th anniversary seemed like the perfect moment to make such a major announcement. However, PlayStation only revealed a themed DualSense controller and some updates for God of War Ragnarök, the most recent entry in the franchise.

Many fans were disappointed by the lack of a new game or a re-release with improvements. Among them was Alifilmworx, who decided to create a remake of the first God of War to elevate the anniversary celebrations. He worked for eight months to recreate one of the saga’s key moments: Kratos’ battle against the Hydra.

The creator developed 3D models, animations, and enhanced visual effects to give new life to the game that defined a generation and paved the way for one of PlayStation’s most successful series. The results are astonishing, as the project looks like a full-fledged remake of the original God of War for PlayStation 5. You can see the results below:

Alifilmworx shared an extensive video explaining his workflow. He claims that the undead designs in God of War Ragnarok: Valhalla “looked too clean and muscular, like gray-painted gymnasts.” Because of this, he aimed to improve them in his project. Players praised the results and asked PlayStation to develop a similar official remake.

The content creator also criticized the 20th-anniversary celebrations. He believes they were bland and that God of War deserved something much better. His remake was simply a way to honor the franchise’s legacy, so it’s unlikely he will reimagine the entire game.

“I at least expected a remaster for the 20th anniversary, and all we got was [a limited-edition DualSense controller]. You’re not even listening [Sony], are you? Forget it. I’ll do it myself.”

Will PlayStation bring back the Greek saga of God of War?

Rumors emerged in late 2024 about a remastered collection of the Greek God of War saga. Several sources claimed the project was real and that it would be announced shortly for PlayStation 5. However, months have passed, and Santa Monica Studio has yet to give any hints about the series’ future.

Many players have lost hope of seeing a remaster or remake of the original games. Supposedly, PlayStation is working on a smaller-scale spin-off set in ancient Greece. It would be a metroidvania-style title that explores more of Kratos’ original story. Sources claim the game was supposed to debut this year but has been delayed to 2026.

A live-action TV series is also in production. The Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions, and Amazon project will begin filming in March 2026. On the other hand, it was recently revealed that PlayStation canceled a multiplayer game in the franchise—footage of which leaked online.

For now, there are no leaks or official clues about a re-release of the original God of War trilogy. The idea isn’t far-fetched, but it seems PlayStation has other priorities for the franchise. The saga’s future is still undecided, and many fans hope Kratos will now face Egyptian deities in future games.
