Video game-based movies have already proven they can be financial successes. Without a doubt, Five Nights at Freddy’s stands as one of the biggest hits in recent years, overcoming negative reviews to become one of 2023s highest-grossing productions. Now, its creators are looking to repeat that success with another adaptation: Dead by Daylight.
Back in early 2023, it was announced that the multiplayer game developed by Behaviour Interactive would be getting a big-screen adaptation. The project is being handled by Blumhouse and Atomic Monster, the production companies led by Jason Blum and James Wan.
Details have been scarce, but it was mentioned at the time that the companies were still looking for a writer and director to take the reins of the production. The studio behind the asymmetrical horror game is also involved in the project.
More than a year has passed since that announcement, and fans are still waiting for additional information about the Dead by Daylight movie. While the release still seems far off, Jason Blum shared some updates that will put the community at ease.

Jason Blum compares the production of Dead by Daylight to Five Nights at Freddy’s
In a recent interview with ComicBook at New York Comic-Con 2024, Blumhouse Productions founder and CEO Jason Blum shared new details about the movie based on the online horror game. He confirmed that they are still in the scriptwriting process and noted that the release is likely not coming soon.
"We’re working on the script. You know, we don’t schedule movies until we have the script just right," Jason Blum stated.
Blum compared the production of the Dead by Daylight film to that of Five Nights at Freddy’s. He explained that one of the reasons why the animatronic horror movie was a success and resonated with audiences was because they took enough time to perfect the script and other key details.

"It took 10 years to make Five Nights at Freddy’s, and I think one of the reasons that movie worked is because we spent a decade trying to get it right," the Blumhouse Productions head commented.
Finally, Jason Blum warned that the movie adaptation of Behaviour Interactive’s video game might remain in the planning phase for months or even years, emphasizing the importance of having the right script. He admitted that it’s unclear how long it will take to complete the writing process.
"I hope we get a script we like. We’re working on it, but it could take 5 years or 12 months. You never know. You can’t make the movie until the script is right, and we don’t know how long that will take," Blum concluded.
Indeed, the creative process behind the Five Nights at Freddy’s movie was fraught with difficulties and setbacks. Early plans emerged a decade ago, but the project stalled, and eventually Warner Bros. handed the film over to Blumhouse Productions.
