To begin with, it’s important to clarify something: The Coalition does not consider Gears of War: E-Day a spin-off of the series. The game was created as the next main installment of the saga, only it will be set back in the timeline.
The studio decided to explore and focus on a key moment for the entire narrative of the series: E-Day or Emergence Day, when the Locust threat begins on Sera. For this reason, Gears of War: E-Day will be a game about the origins of the saga and some of its most iconic characters.
As we saw in the reveal trailer, the title will be led by younger versions of Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago, who, despite being seasoned warriors, do not yet have the skills or the necessary weaponry to face this threat.
What will Gears of War: E-Day be about? When does its story take place?
According to the details, Gears of War: E-Day takes place 14 years before the events of the original Gears of War. As mentioned, it will be set right at the beginning of the Locust invasion of Sera, so we will see how its best warriors adapt to face the danger.
Its story will be told from the perspective of Marcus and Dom, delving into their brotherhood and a bit into the Pendulum Wars, a conflict that takes place before the start of the franchise.
The game promises an emotional story filled with action-packed moments. Marcus and Dom will create a bond through tragedy, as they met thanks to Carlos, Dom’s brother who died. Both will deal with grief while enjoying a period of peace on Sera; however, things will change suddenly, and they will have to return to the fight despite their pain.
How will Gears of War: E-Day be played?
The Coalition has stated that they will not abandon the series’ formula and that veteran fans will feel at home with the new game. Gears of War: E-Day will offer plenty of third-person action and a campaign that combines the beloved gameplay with a deep narrative.
However, the studio will incorporate innovations in all aspects so that the game feels like the titles everyone loves while also being a fresh experience that takes advantage of new technology.
“We are revisiting the tone and feel of what makes Gears great, but we are leveraging new techniques, new processes, and new technology that will make the game feel better than ever. It’s going to be amazing, a game that will feel truly new and authentically Gears,” stated the studio.
How will Gears of War: E-Day look?
The Coalition has made it clear that they are a benchmark when it comes to working with Unreal Engine. For this reason, they will take advantage of the potential of Unreal Engine 5, the latest engine from Epic Games, to create Gears of War: E-Day.
Thanks to this, the new game will offer over 100 times more environmental and character details than Gears 5. It will also feature hardware-accelerated ray-tracing lighting, as well as new generation reflections, shadows, and effects. As a result, the game will look spectacular.
When will Gears of War: E-Day debut?
Gears of War: E-Day does not yet have a confirmed release date. The Coalition also did not reveal an approximate window for its release, so we will have to wait a little longer to know more about it. What is already certain is that Gears of War: E-Day will be a day one release for Xbox Game Pass.
