Halo has been Xboxs flagship franchise since its original release revolutionized the FPS genre, quickly becoming a staple for Microsoft’s first console. Most of the main titles in the series eventually came to PC, with one exception. Now, we finally know why it never landed on computers.

We’re talking about Halo 5: Guardians, one of the franchises most criticized games due to its divisive narrative and changes to game mechanics. Despite a lukewarm reception among fans, it did find a niche audience.

The sci-fi FPS by 343 Industries debuted as an Xbox One exclusive in 2015. Although Halo 5: Forge, the level editor allowing players to create custom maps and game modes, is available on PC, the main game never came to computers.

A former developer sheds some light on why one of the franchise’s most divisive titles never arrived on other platforms.

Halo 5: Guardians Remained Xbox One Exclusive Due to Technical Difficulties

Responding to a fan on social media, developer Tyler Owens, who worked at 343 Industries, revealed that a PC port for Halo 5: Guardians was considered at one point. However, he explained that the team encountered technical issues, leading to the projects cancellation.

“I wish [a PC port of Halo 5 would happen], but I think it’s unlikely. From what I remember, the port ran into significant technical challenges and was scrapped.”

Owens didn’t delve into specifics, leaving the exact technical issues faced by the team unknown. Fans speculate that the problem might have involved the framerate being tied to physics, which would have complicated the PC port’s development.

However, the former 343 Industries member admitted that he wasn’t closely involved with the high-level details at the time. “That sounds plausible. Honestly, I wasn’t super plugged into the higher-level details given my role at that time,” he added.

Tyler Owens doubts Halo 5: Guardians will ever come to PC

While Halo 5 is notably absent on PC, the rest of the main games, including Halo Infinite, are available on the platform. As for the franchise’s future, it was recently reported that the series will migrate to Unreal Engine 5. With any luck, this change will make future sequels more accessible to PC players.
