The video game industry is shifting in a surprising direction for those who have witnessed its development in recent decades. The model of releasing games exclusively on consoles through exclusivity is not as effective as it used to be, and hardware companies are beginning to consider adjustments to release these titles on other platforms. PlayStation is not exempt from this, and Sony executives see it as a necessary step.

Sony reaffirms that PlayStation will continue its path as a multi-platform

In the recent PlayStation report, where units of PS5 sold, first-party game sales, and PlayStation Plus users were revealed, Hiroki Totoki, president of Sony, reaffirmed that the brand will take a multi-platform direction (via Tom Warren on X). He mentioned that the era of promoting the PlayStation brand exclusively in relation to the console is fading away, and the priority is to leverage the content they have developed by bringing it to other platforms.

Why does PlayStation need its games to be multi-platform?

While the executive mentions that they will continue to release their former exclusives on PC, he considers other platforms for the future to improve profits as the traditional model has come to an end: "In the past, we wanted to popularize the console… but theres a synergy to it. So, if you have solid in-house content, not just with our console but also with other platforms like computers, in-house content can be developed for multiple platforms, and that can help improve operating profits."

In this way, it is a fact that PlayStation and its productions will go beyond what we currently enjoy on console and PC, as it is a necessary move to improve the brands finances. In that regard, Sony revealed that PlayStation Studios projects are good, and there is enthusiasm among the teams, but they have to learn to handle budgets better as they are not proving to be as profitable. At the same time, it was reported that PS5 sales, while good, did not meet expectations, reached a peak, and are expected to decline from this point onward and in the coming years.

What do you think of this new era of gaming? Do you like that exclusivities are no longer definitive and can reach other platforms?
