Bayonetta is one of the most recognizable figures in modern gaming. Her style, confidence, and intricate design made her an instant icon since her debut in 2009. Now celebrating the series’ 16th anniversary, creator Hideki Kamiya shared an anecdote revealing how crucial her glasses were in defining her identity.

What did Kamiya say about the witch’s design?
In a commemorative post, Kamiya revealed that both the team and the clients asked him to remove Bayonetta’s glasses — but he flat-out refused:
“Our clients asked us to take them off, and it’s true that I kept rejecting their requests. But the cinematic producer, Shimomura, said: ‘Bayonetta’s glasses are like her underwear — they must never be removed under any circumstances,’” Kamiya recalled.
He added that although the reason behind the glasses was never officially explained, he always wanted to explore it through the story:
“Maybe it’s due to some trauma, or maybe something else… but in every game I made, the only man who has ever seen her face without glasses is Luka,” he said with a laugh.
Meanwhile, designer Mari Shimazaki also shared her perspective:
“When I was sketching the first drafts, Kamiya appeared behind me and whispered, ‘Give her glasses.’ Since then, it became a habit — I always left an extra layer in my designs reserved for them,” she explained on X.
These statements confirm that Bayonetta’s glasses weren’t just a fashion accessory — they became a symbol of her strength, mystery, and sensuality. Over a decade later, they remain an inseparable part of her image.
