The leak of documents following the hack of Insomniac Games has revealed information about the studios future projects and shed light on what has happened with its past releases. At the same time, it provides a perspective on the overall gaming landscape that is not exactly the honeymoon everyone talks about.
Insomniac only earned $567 USD with Sunset Overdrive
Last night, the group that hacked Insomniac Games released documents and material from Sonys studio, and one of them contains information about the financial performance of its video games. The standout case is Sunset Overdrive (via Insider-Gaming), an Xbox One exclusive with a later release on PC, which debuted in 2014 and was hailed as one of the best console games.
Unfortunately, despite the positive reviews, Sunset Overdrive was far from being a great business, as according to the data, Insomniac Games only made a profit of $567 USD, a few hundred dollars for a game that cost millions.

How much did Sunset Overdrive cost and why did it make so little money?
In this regard, it is noted that the development cost of Sunset Overdrive was $42,682,135 USD; this figure increases with expenses allocated to marketing, a detail that is rarely disclosed. In the cut made, Insomniac states that the game sold 1,898,433 copies, generating $49,737,133 USD in revenue. After covering the investment, the portion for co-developer Blind Squirrel Games, and the costs of bringing the game to market and promoting it, the studio only earned $567 USD.
In related news, the leak affecting Insomniac Games revealed a prototype of Marvels Wolverine, and players are already complaining as they believe it is exploiting Sonys formula derived from the design and mechanics of Uncharted and the current era of God of War. Likewise, the leaked documents revealed the studios release plans for the coming years.
