The live-action series of One Piece turned out to be a complete surprise. In addition to meeting the expectations of fans of the original material, it captivated a new audience. While this production could be a stepping stone for anime adaptations, a prestigious actor from Dragon Ball Z still has doubts about these live-action projects.
Sean Schemmel, a famous voice actor known for voicing Goku in Dragon Ball and its English dub sequels, had an interview with the Bleeding Cool portal. There, he talked about Hollywoods attempts to take Japanese manga and anime works for adaptation.

Despite One Piece receiving a very positive reception, the American performer has a controversial opinion about that project. He also expresses skepticism about whether the unique characteristics of anime will ever translate correctly into live-action productions.
"Ive only seen part of the One Piece live-action series on Netflix, and frankly, I think its terrible. However, the live-action Dragon Ball Z movie was also awful, but for a different reason. They changed directors halfway through, even before production began," the actor stated.
"I feel bad that my opinion is like this. Now I feel like a public figure, and Im too nervous to say, I dont really like the One Piece series. And thats not necessarily the fault of the team and the cast. They probably have talent," he commented during another part of the interview.
Sean Schemmel emphasized that his dislike for these kinds of projects is related to how Japanese works are translated into another medium. For example, he pointed out that the large eyes in anime characters are a feature that is conspicuously absent in adaptations. The same goes for other elements like hair and the plot itself.
According to these statements, the actor is still among those who view this kind of production with suspicion. Although he has doubts now, he is open to a project changing his mind, especially if a fan is in charge of the adaptation.
"The ultimate test will finally be: if we have the right person, will this genre translate into live-action? Im not convinced of that yet, but I could certainly be wrong," Sean Schemmel concluded.
