Ever since its reveal, the PlayStation 5’s massive size has been a talking point among gamers. Many fans have wished for a more compact redesign, but with no signs of Sony making one, a creative modder decided to take matters into his own hands, building a portable version of the PS5 that can be played anywhere.
The project wasn’t easy, but TERA managed to create a smaller, lighter PS5 that’s much easier to carry around. While it’s not as compact as a true handheld system, this custom build makes Sony’s console far more portable thanks to its integrated display.
A Custom-Built PS5 That Fits in a Briefcase
The PS5 is notoriously bulky and far less travel-friendly than the Xbox Series S—let alone the Nintendo Switch. Determined to change that, modder TERA set out to create a version that could actually be taken on the go. The result is impressive: a briefcase-style PS5 that looks sleek and comes with a built-in screen for gaming anywhere.
To achieve this, TERA repurposed the console’s core components and faced one of the toughest challenges: redesigning the cooling system, which takes up much of the original PS5’s interior space.

Sleek Design, Custom Cooling, and Full Functionality
The custom system uses thin copper heat sinks placed beside the motherboard, supported by three high-performance fans to keep the processor running cool. The modder also designed a custom case with a clean, minimalist look and added an LCD display, allowing users to play without needing an external monitor or TV.
Thanks to these modifications, the portable PS5 is smaller and lighter than the standard model. It’s not pocket-sized like a Switch, but fans agree it’s one of the most eye-catching PS5 mods to date.
Rumors Hint at a New PlayStation Handheld in Development
Meanwhile, industry rumors suggest Sony is already working on an official handheld system that could launch alongside the PlayStation 6. The device, reportedly codenamed “Canis,” is said to run PS5 and PS4 games natively, featuring a touchscreen, MicroSD slot, M.2 SSD bay, haptic feedback, and dual microphones.
It’s also rumored to connect to external displays, offering a hybrid experience similar to the Switch. Performance-wise, the system may deliver improved ray-tracing capabilities, potentially rivaling devices like the ROG Ally X.
Sony has yet to confirm the project, and details about its next-generation hardware remain scarce. Analysts expect the PS6 and its companion handheld could arrive sometime around 2027—or later.
