PlayStation fans hoping for a new God of War installment might have to hold out a bit longer. According to a reliable insider, the rumored spin-off set in Ancient Greece may now be scheduled for a 2026 release.
Last week was packed with major announcements across the gaming world, with PlayStation’s State of Play taking center stage. The showcase featured a variety of new trailers, first looks, and surprise reveals, making it one of the most talked-about events in recent months.
However, one highly anticipated title was noticeably missing. Despite strong rumors leading up to the event, the speculated God of War metroidvania was nowhere to be found.
Speaking on the latest episode of the Last of the Nintendogs podcast, industry insider Jeff Grubb shared that the project, once believed to be on track for release this year, has been delayed.
While discussing potential titles that could make their way to the Switch 2, Grubb mentioned Marathon as a likely candidate. He also referenced the unannounced God of War project set in Ancient Greece, saying it would not release until 2026, but didn’t share further details or a specific release window.
“I have Marathon and the unannounced new God of War Greek project, which I heard was pushed into 2026 as well,” Grubb said.
Initial leaks hinted that the next God of War would expand the franchise’s mythological scope even further and be set in ancient Egypt. The idea stirred excitement amongst longtime fans, who were hoping to see Kratos take on the deities of that region.
Recent reports, however, suggest that the next installment could go back to its roots by revisiting Ancient Greece, the setting of the original trilogy, its prequel, and the spin-offs released on PSP. But rather than a return to large-scale, 3D action, the game is said to be a 2.5D metroidvania.
