Before the Switch 2 reveal, fans were buzzing with speculation about new features, including a USB-C port spotted on the top of the console. One popular theory was that it could support a second screen, effectively turning the device into a modern version of the Nintendo DS. But that dream was quickly dashed after the Japanese firm stepped in to put those rumors to rest.

No DS Mode for Switch 2

In an interview with GNN News via Tweak Town, Switch 2 hardware producer Kouichi Kawamoto clarified the purpose of the console’s second USB-C port and dismissed the possibility of a dual-screen setup.

According to Kawamoto, the idea of connecting a second display is simply not feasible, as the upper USB-C port does not support video output.

“The video output of Switch 2 is limited to the USB-C port at the bottom; the USB-C at the top cannot output images,” he noted.

Nintendo has since confirmed that the top UBC-C port is only for charging and connecting other official accessories, including the Nintendo Camera, designed to work with the new C button.

Some fans are now holding out hope that DS titles might at least make their way to the Switch Online catalog. This library already offers games from platforms like NES, SNES, Game Boy, Game Boy Advance, N64, and GameCube.

Big Titles on the Horizon for Switch 2

While the lack of dual-screen functionality may be disappointing to some, anticipation is still high for the Switch 2’s game lineup. A Nintendo executive recently fueled hype, teasing a potential 3D Mario comeback. Fans have been waiting for a follow-up since Super Mario Odyssey.

Rumors also suggest that the latest installment of Assassin’s Creed, a major hit, could be headed to Nintendo’s next console.
