“Nobody cares about Banjo-Kazooie”: Xbox Executive clarifies his controversial comment about Rare’s franchise

Por Ulises Contreras el 21 de October de 2024

In the 1990s, many franchises emerged that captivated fans and became instant classics. One of them was Banjo-Kazooie, which stood out for its humor and colorful world. Many years have passed since its last installment, which is why a Xbox executive’s comment lit the torches of the community.

Let’s remember that the famous platformer from Rare debuted in 1998 with its first game for the Nintendo 64, while its sequel followed shortly after in 2000. Then, Microsoft acquired Rare in 2002, and fans had to wait until 2008 to see the return of the bear and his loyal companion.

However, it’s no secret that Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts did not meet fans’ expectations. As a result, the franchise has remained inactive since then, though the original games are part of Rare Replay, and the main characters appeared as DLC in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

The future of the series remains uncertain, but a joke from an Xbox executive raised eyebrows in the community.

During a recent event promoting the upcoming release of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, Aaron Greenberg, Xbox’s Vice President of Marketing, asked attendees which of the brands franchises they would like to see return. Spanish YouTuber Puerta al Sótano responded, saying he wanted to see the return of Banjo-Kazooie.

According to the content creator, the Xbox executive replied, "nobody cares about Banjo-Kazooie." Naturally, these reports caught the community’s attention and sparked a heated debate on social media.

Many agreed with the comments, while Banjo-Kazooie fans criticized Aaron Greenberg for downplaying the franchise. Others thought the remarks weren’t serious and that it was just a joke that got out of hand.

Indeed, the Xbox Marketing Vice President clarified on social media that his comments were real but made in a sarcastic tone. He also emphasized that he’s a big fan of the series, although he didn’t reveal if there are any plans to revive it in the near future.

"That’s right. I know very well how much Banjo-Kazooie means to our fans and players around the world. It holds a special place in my heart, as I played these classic titles growing up," Aaron Greenberg responded to a fan.

While the executive cleared up the controversy, the future of the franchise remains uncertain.
