Sonic fans have been very lucky in recent years, enjoying multiple projects based on the beloved franchise. As the year draws to a close, SEGA and Paramount saved a major surprise to finish it with a bang: the announcement of a brand-new Sonic movie.
Unlike Halo, Sonic’s leap to the big screen has been extremely successful, and Paramount has not hesitated to extend its partnership with SEGA to produce even more film projects.
There are already four productions: Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and Knuckles. A fifth film—tentatively titled Sonic the Hedgehog 5—is already in the works. Now, a sixth production has just been announced.

A new Sonic movie is on the way
According to information from The Hollywood Reporter, the production will be handled by Original Film, the American company involved in previous installments. However, no synopsis or story details were revealed.
Unfortunately, since it is still in an early stage of development, no production details or additional plans were offered beyond confirmation of its release date, set for December 22, 2028.
What stands out about this new project is that it is described as a “Sonic Universe event film,” as reported by Variety. This suggests it will be important, though it may be a movie outside the main storyline.
We still have three years to go before we can watch this new production, but this is great news for fans of the Blue Blur. Considering that Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is set to premiere on March 19, 2027, the wait between films will only be 1 year and 9 months, instead of the usual 2–3 years between releases.
It’s worth noting that this announcement was made alongside confirmation of a new live-action production of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, which will also involve Neal H. Moritz, founder of Original Film and one of the key figures behind Sonic’s cinematic success.
