The Last of Us is gradually reaching the finale of its second season, but it continues to generate plenty of discussion. Fans are still debating whether sticking closely to the original video game story, and not altering the fate of one of the most beloved characters, was the right decision. And yes, even Pedro Pascal’s sister cried over that scene.

Before continuing, a spoiler warning: This article discusses a major moment in Season 2 of the HBO live-action adaptation.

From its outset, this new season by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann has largely mirrored The Last of Us Part II. While the show has taken creative liberties in some episodes, it pulled no punches with Joel Miller’s brutal murder by Abby Anderson.

Lux Pascal, Pedro Pascal’s Sister, Opens Up About Joel’s Death

Joel’s tragic death, portrayed by Pedro Pascal, once again divided fans and made episode two one of the most controversial in The Last of Us Season 2. But beyond frustration, sadness was the prevailing emotion.

In an interview with Remezcla magazine, Lux Pascal spoke honestly about how she experienced Joel’s death. Although she knew how the second episode would end, she admitted she couldn’t stop herself from crying.

“I have to say that, being Pedro Pascal’s sister, I knew how that episode would end. I knew what was going to happen. But even so, I saw it and I wanted to throw the iPad. I mean, I burst into tears,” she said.

Lux pointed out that Pedro has a long history of dying on screen, recalling that he also died in Game of Thrones and The Equalizer 2. But Joel’s demise hit particularly hard.

“It’s not the first time he’s done it to me. It’s not the second time he’s done it to me. I think it’s the fourth time he’s done it to me,” the actress continued. “And each is more violent than the other. Seeing my brother die that way, I didn’t like it at all.”

Joel’s Demise Sparks Controversy Among Fans

Joel’s death marked a turning point in the HBO series, and many fans expressed their disappointment online. Following the premiere of episode two, message boards and social media were flooded with frustration. Some viewers even threatened to stop watching altogether.

While it’s unknown if viewership declined after that point, the show has faced steady negative criticism. Episode four, which delves into Isaac Dixon’s past and continues Dina and Ellie’s revenge journey, is one of the lowest-rated by fans.
