Phil Spencer: Xbox and Activision Layoffs Were Due to Lack of Growth

Por Pedro Pérez Cesari el 26 de March de 2024

The celebration over the closure of the Activision Blizzard King deal ended quickly, as a sobering reality, Microsoft and Xbox began 2024 by announcing massive layoffs within their recent acquisition. The surprise turned into a regrettable event that added to the industrys readjustment due to not meeting the lofty expectations set in recent years. Phil Spencer, head of Microsoft Gaming, spoke about the issue and explained the reasons behind it.

Why Did Microsoft Lay Off Xbox and Activision Blizzard Employees?

During an interview with Polygon, Phil Spencer was questioned about the current state of the industry and the reasons behind the layoffs at Activision Blizzard. In response, the executive pointed out the context surrounding these decisions, specifically the changes in the industry regarding the rising cost of game development, platform operation, and whats happening in the console sector.

In that regard, the head of Microsoft Gaming acknowledged the lack of growth in the industry overall and in the Xbox business in particular, especially in the console sector, as decisive factors for the layoffs. He also mentioned the gaming industrys needs to meet investor expectations: "Its a little bit of both. But I will say that what worries me most about the industry is the lack of growth. You have an industry projected to be smaller next year in terms of players and dollars. You also have many publicly traded companies in the industry that have to show growth to their investors because why would they own part of a company thats not going to grow?"

Phil Spencer Questions the Current State of the Industry

Later, Phil Spencer considered the current moment as one of reflection when analyzing the human cost of the gaming industrys decisions: "Were a business. I cant afford to run a business thats not profitable and growing within Microsoft. I reflect on friends of mine who have been displaced and lost their jobs, and I dont want this industry to be a place where people cant confidently build a career. So thats why I keep looking back: How can this industry grow again? For us as Xbox or any of the teams out there, what were experiencing is really a result of an industry thats not growing, but it can and will grow again. However, the implications have a human impact, and we should all reflect on that and think about it."
