PlayStation 6 and New Sony Handheld: Leaked Specs and Release Window

New leaks suggest Sony is working on a next-gen console and a powerful handheld device with a focus on accessibility over raw specs.

The PlayStation 5 still has a few strong years ahead, but Sony is already hard at work on its next-generation console. While the PlayStation 6 remains under wraps, new leaks are offering a glimpse at what we might expect, including early hardware specs, a possible release window, and even information on a new handheld device rumored to launch alongside it.

These details come from tech YouTuber Moore’s Law Is Dead (via Insider Gaming), a frequent source of credible hardware leaks. His latest report outlines potential specs for both the PS6 and a new portable console currently in development.

What We Know About the PlayStation 6 So Far

According to the report, the PlayStation 6 will be more powerful than the PS5 Pro—but not by as much as some might hope. Rather than pushing for cutting-edge performance, Sony is said to be focused on offering a more affordable next-gen system, similar to the strategy it used with the PS4. That could mean more modest specs in exchange for a lower price point.

Sony is reportedly aiming for a mid-2027 release, though the launch could take place anytime between fall 2027 and early 2028.

The PS6 may follow a PS4-style strategy, focusing on affordability over cutting-edge specs.

As for hardware, the PS6 is expected to feature a chiplet-based architecture, likely based on AMD’s Navi 5. It could include an 8-core Zen 6 CPU (or a newer variant), along with 40 to 48 RDNA 5 compute units running at over 3GHz. Memory bandwidth may range from 160 to 192 bits, using GDDR7 RAM at speeds of 32GT/s or higher. Power consumption is estimated at 160W TBP.

In terms of graphics, the console is rumored to offer around three times the rasterization performance of the PS5, with even greater improvements in ray tracing.

New Handheld in the Works: Project “Canis”

Alongside the PS6, Sony is also rumored to be developing a new portable console, codenamed “Canis.” Unlike the PlayStation Portal, this system would reportedly be capable of running PS4 and PS5 games natively.

The device is said to feature a touchscreen, MicroSD card support, an M.2 SSD slot, haptic feedback, dual microphones, and the ability to connect to external displays—suggesting a hybrid design similar to the Steam Deck or Nintendo Switch.

Under the hood, it’s expected to include a 4-core Zen 6c CPU and 12 to 20 RDNA 5 compute units, clocked between 1.6 and 2GHz. It may use LPDDR5X memory running at over 7500 MT/s on a 128-bit bus, with a total power draw of just 15W TBP.

Performance is rumored to reach roughly half the rasterization power of a PS5, but with superior ray tracing capabilities. The report also claims it could outperform the upcoming ROG Ally X, developed by ASUS and Xbox.

As with all leaks, this information should be taken with caution. Sony has not confirmed any details about the PlayStation 6 or its next portable system. Still, if these reports are accurate, the next generation of PlayStation hardware could mark a shift toward more versatile and cost-conscious gaming experiences
