Exclusivity was once the cornerstone of console strategy. For years, companies relied on it to build loyalty and draw users into their platforms. But the gaming landscape is shifting. Both Xbox and PlayStation have begun embracing a more flexible, multiplatform approach. And now, even Gears of War is joining the movement.

After years of speculation about a remastered Gears trilogy, we finally have something concrete. It remains unclear if the sequels are making a return, but the original game is officially getting a makeover.

Microsoft has just announced Gears of War: Reloaded, a complete overhaul of the original 2006 title with improved graphics, 120 FPS support, and other upgrades. But the real bombshell? It’s launching on PlayStation for the first time ever.

The Coalition teamed up with Sumo Interactive and Disbelief to bring this new version, which will be available on Xbox Series X|S, PC, and PS5 on August 26.

A Divisive Move for Fans

Reactions to the announcement have been mixed. While many applaud the move as a way to bring the game to new audiences, others believe it undermines Xbox brand identity.

“What’s the point???? You’ve already remastered it. Oh wait, to sell out the soul of the Xbox once again, kill off the platform and sell the game on PS,” one critic wrote.

“I don’t know how bad your financial situation must be to be selling the licenses that made your brand great and differentiated it from your direct competitor,” another added. “This is ridiculous. Where do you think you’re going as a videogames brand? If I want a GamePass, I can get it on any device without needing an Xbox; if I want to play Xbox exclusives, I don’t need an Xbox either. Why should I get an Xbox then?”

Despite the backlash, many fans—especially PlayStation users—are celebrating. For them, it’s a chance to play a classic they lacked access to.

“I’m going to enjoy replaying it on PS5,” one fan wrote on social media.

“After all these years, I think it’s safe to say PlayStation won the console war,” another added.

“My 2006 self would never believe this,” said a third. “It’s great that Xbox is dropping exclusivity, but they still need something new to stay competitive!”

Everything in Gears of War: Reloaded

PS5 fans are in for a treat with the most complete version of the original Gears of War to date. Reloaded includes all content from the 2015 Ultimate Edition, such as the bonus campaign chapter, additional multiplayer maps, and a range of cosmetic items.

This remaster supports 4K resolution, 120 FPS in online multiplayer, and full cross-play between platforms. Developers have also removed loading times during the campaign and added enhanced shadows and reflections.

Gears of War: Reloaded will cost $39.99 USD across all platforms. Xbox and PC players with Game Pass can play at no extra cost, and those who already own the Ultimate Edition will receive this new version for free.
