The PlayStation 5 is approaching its fifth anniversary, and talk about its successor is already starting to pick up. According to a reliable source, Sony’s plans for the PS6 include two different hardware models, one of which will be a portable console.

A Portable PS6 Capable of Running PS5 Games

KeplerL2, a credible leaker known for revealing that Sony was working on two SoCs (systems on a chip) for the PS6, has now shared fresh insights on the Japanese company’s plans.

According to his sources, Sony’s next-generation console will include both a traditional system and a less powerful variant, somewhat similar to the Xbox Series X|S model. In this case, however, the lower-powered device would be portable.

This handheld PlayStation is said to feature a 15W SoC built on a 3nm nod, which would place it roughly on par with the Steam Deck. Considering the expected launch window is still around two years away, this seems like a plausible rumor.

As for performance, this portable device is expected to run current-gen PS5 games, albeit at lower resolutions and frame rates.

In terms of power, the leaker describes it as sitting between an Xbox Series S and the current PS5.

While this all remains speculative for now, it wouldn’t be out of character for Sony. The PlayStation Portal performed better than expected, and fans have made it clear they’d love a handheld that plays games natively.

With the Switch 2 on the horizon and Xbox reportedly teaming up with ASUS on its own portable, it’s no surprise Sony is looking to stay in the race.
