Nintendo and its lawyers are notorious for fiercely protecting their IPs, especially when it comes to unusual ventures like a dating app. As strange as it sounds, someone actually tried to create a dating platform specifically for Super Smash Bros. fans. The goal of Smash Together was to help players find their perfect match while bonding over their love for the game.

Unsurprisingly, the company behind Mario intervened just as the app was preparing to begin its first beta test. The creators said they received the dreaded cease-and-desist letter from Nintendo’s legal team and, not particularly eager to enter a brawl with the gaming giant, decided to pull the plug.

A dating app for Super Smash Bros. fans

Initial details about Smash Together surfaced in June of last year, and while it sounded ridiculous to some, it gained attention for its niche appeal. Using a custom algorithm, the app promised to match players with their ideal partner—someone who understood how much they love to smash.

The creators even shared concept art, including mock-ups of user profiles, the app’s interface, and several features designed to let fans mingle and connect. Naturally, there was a dedicated Smash Bros. section, where users could show off their in-game achievements, list their favorite characters, and more.

“Introducing Smash Together, the premium dating site for Super Smash Bros. enjoyers of all kinds! Meet your dream doubles partner (in and out of Smash) with our robust matchmaking algorithm, tailored to connect you with your ideal Smash partner,” read the announcement.

The beta was supposed to launch last Thursday, but those plans were cut short when Nintendo allegedly stepped in with a legal warning.

Was Smash Together even real—or just a parody?

Earlier this week, the developers took to social media to announce that the beta was officially canceled. The post included a rather fitting image: a screenshot from the Super Mario 64 DS minigame where Yoshi plucks petals to find out if he’ll find love.

The app’s shutdown doesn’t surprise longtime Nintendo fans—after all, the company is well-known for fiercely defending its franchises. But there’s still some doubt around the whole affair. Many wonder if Smash Together was ever a serious project, or just a satirical jab at both dating apps like Tinder and Nintendo’s aggressive legal reputation.
