The long-awaited Switch 2 arrives tomorrow, and Nintendo has already prepared everything you need to jump in. But before you dive into your new console, there’s an important first step: downloading system update 20.1.1.

Earlier today, Nintendo published the full patch notes for the update, which goes live on June 5. You’ll need to install it right away to unlock everything the new console has to offer. Here’s what you need to know.

What’s in the first update?

Nintendo says their next-gen console will get frequent system updates to refine player experience and add new features. Update 20.1.1 is the first of many, and it’s essential if you want to get the most out of your Switch 2 from day one.

First off, this update introduces backward compatibility, allowing users to play titles from the original Switch, with some games even getting extra performance or visual upgrades. It also enables access to online services like Nintendo Switch Online, GameChat, and GameShare.

Version 20.1.1 is also requiered to transfer data from your old Switch, access news, use Virtual Game Cards, and share your screenshots or game clips. But most importantly, it is necessary to access the eShop and download or purchase new digital content.

Players also need to install it to use microSD Express cards, activate Key-Cards, and link their console to official Switch apps and parental controls, so make sure yours is connected to the internet from the start to get it done quickly.

How to update your Switch 2

Just like the original Switch, your new console will try to install updates automatically. But since this is the first one, there’s always a chance something might go wrong.

Nintendo explained that the update will begin downloading once you’ve completed the system’s initial setup. If it doesn’t, the console will prompt you to download it when you try to use certain features from the main menu.

If that still doesn’t work, follow these steps to update your system manually:

  1. Select the “System Settings” on the HOME Menu.
  2. Scroll down through the System Settings menu and select the “System” option.
  3. Select “System Update” to start the system update process. If an update is available, the download process will begin automatically.
