The Last of Us Fans Want New Titles, Not Just Remakes

After years of remasters and re-releases, even devoted The Last of Us fans are feeling burned out.

There’s no denying that The Last of Us is one of PlayStation’s biggest success stories. But even the most loyal fans have limits, and many feel Sony has pushed this franchise way too far. After countless re-releases of just two games, players are asking for fresh content.

To coincide with the upcoming second season of the live-action show, PlayStation announced yet another edition, The Last of Us Complete, that includes both remastered games. Rather than excitement, the news drew frustration from fans, who are calling for new titles and a broader focus on other franchises.

The Last of Us Re-Releases Stir Fan Fatigue

This latest and apparently definitive bundle includes upgraded versions of both games for PS5, along with exclusive collectibles for die-hard fans. It’s designed for newcomers and longtime followers alike, and will be available on July 10.

Still, many in the gaming community see this release as excessive. Some argue the franchise has been repeatedly resold since its PS3 debut, and lament that Naughty Dog hasn’t released anything original in years. Others also voiced concerns over the studio abandoning Uncharted and PlayStation’s overall lack of new titles, a problem many attribute to its unsuccessful push into live-service games.

Naughty Dog is currently working on Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, but fans are still urging the studio and PlayStation to let The Last of Us rest and shift attention toward untapped ideas and long-awaited revivals, such as Bloodborne.

“Seriously? Don’t they have any other franchises? My PS5 has been collecting dust for two months.”

“It’s crazy how they’ve milked The Last of Us, and there are only two games. Imagine if there were more.”

“Ever heard of releasing new games?”

Naughty Dog’s Next Project Still Far Off

Even fans who understand the business strategy behind this latest release admit it’s disappointing. And unfortunately, Naughty Dog’s next big project isn’t coming any time soon.

According to Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet won’t arrive until 2027, just as PlayStation 5 reaches the end of its lifecycle.
