Although Halo Infinite and the Paramount+ series didn’t quite hit the mark for many fans, the future of the franchise under Halo Studios looks promising. But just in case, dedicated fans are stepping up with projects that have sparked real excitement in the gaming community.
One standout is Halo: GoldSource, a fan-made mod that’s been in development for months and has now officially launched its 1.0 version, leaving Beta behind. This mod transforms Half-Life into a brand-new Halo multiplayer experience, essentially giving fans a fresh Halo game powered by Valve’s classic engine, free of charge.
What’s Halo: GoldSource All About?
The journey to this release hasn’t been smooth. The original team worked on it for months before joining forces with The Phoenix Project Software, a group of modders who took the reins and provided the tools needed to finish the mission.
Using the Aura base code, Halo: GoldSource aims to capture that classic Xbox feel inside the Half-Life engine. For now, it’s focused solely on multiplayer, so there’s no campaign mode yet.
Whether they take on AI opponents or battle other players online, fans can jump into familiar modes like Slayer and Firefight, along with maps faithfully recreated from the original Halo games. The arsenal includes everything from the iconic Magnum pistol of Combat Evolved to the heavy-duty assault rifles from later installments.
The developers admit the mod still has rough edges and room for improvement but are committed to rolling out updates over the coming months. They plan to roll out version 1.1 and a winter update before the end of the year.
The mod is available to download here and you can watch the trailer below.
Spartan Survivors: Another Fan Project Gaining Momentum
Another fan project making waves is Spartan Survivors, which reimagines Halo as a Vampire Survivors-style game. This fresh take has grabbed the attention of fans, and even caught the eye of Halo Studios and Xbox, both of which have promised not to interfere.
Spartan Survivors is available now for free on PC through itch.io, with a Steam release planned for July. After that, it’s expected to come to mobile devices and Xbox consoles.
