“We Made Awful Games Before, But We Can Evolve” — Bloober Team After the Success of Silent Hill 2

Before the launch of the Silent Hill 2 remake, and based on the previews Konami showed, many thought choosing Bloober Team was a mistake. After all, the studio, known for horror games, has a track record of hits and misses. However, the reality turned out differently—the remake is a fantastic game, and it seems poised to become a turning point for the Polish studio, which even acknowledges that they’ve released terrible games in the past.

Bloober Admits They Made Some Very Bad Games Before Silent Hill 2

In an interview with GameSpot, Jacek Zieba, co-director of the Silent Hill 2 remake, spoke about what this release means, its excellent reception, and what lies ahead for Bloober Team, including their new IP, Cronos: The New Dawn. Zieba sees both titles as evidence of the studio’s evolution over the years, learning from both successes and mistakes to reach a higher level of creativity and development.

Silent Hill 2 could be a turning point for Bloober Team

Zieba also acknowledged that Bloober had produced some very bad games in the past, but that’s behind them: “We wanted to find our niche, and we did, so we just evolved with it. How that happens is more complex, but it also happens organically in a way, like with Layers of Fear in 2016. People in the studio were saying, ‘Okay, we made some shitty games before, but we can evolve.’”

The remake of Silent Hill 2 has just surpassed a million copies sold, and both Bloober and Konami celebrated as it’s an important milestone, considering that before this release, the entire Silent Hill franchise, across all games since 1999, had only sold 9 million copies.

According to Bloober Team, the work they’ve done with the Silent Hill remake has given them confidence with Konami’s IP, and they’re interested in creating more games like this within the franchise. Fans are asking for remakes of Silent Hill, Silent Hill 3, and Silent Hill 4: The Room.

In case you didn’t know, Bloober Team was founded in 2008. From then until 2016, they developed puzzle, tower defense, and even an interactive documentary on Ancient Egypt, with releases on Nintendo DS and PC.

After that, the Polish studio shifted to horror games:
