One of the events that surprised many and left others dissatisfied is related to how the game portrayed Joel Miller. While the live-action adaptation has proven to be very faithful to the main events and characters of the video game series, some hope that the producers will make some changes, deviating from the original material.
Will The Last of Us show change Joel Millers fate?
With filming just around the corner, Joels actor, Pedro Pascal, attended the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, and on the red carpet, he was asked about the possibility of Season 2 deviating from The Last of Us: Part II, specifically regarding the fate of his character, Joel.
Pascal chose not to evade the topic but addressed it by discussing how the producers can take the liberty to use the original material and "find ways to build upon it" to adapt it to a different format and surprise the audience.
However, Pascal avoided giving details about what will happen to the character, not only because he doesnt want to spoil the story for anyone but also because he said he still doesnt have "all the information" about what will be done in the adaptation, as he confessed to Deadline.
Pascals response was somewhat ambiguous, but in line with producer Craig Mazin, who stated at the end of 2023 that they dont feel limited by the original material, leaving all possibilities open regarding the narrative of Season 2.
Either way, filming will take place in early February after Pascal undergoes surgery for a shoulder injury, which fortunately did not escalate and will not alter the production schedule.
