Will Larian Studios Make Baldur’s Gate 4 or an Expansion? Director Shares Very Bad News

Baldur’s Gate 3 debuted in mid-2023 and immediately caught the attention of players for its high quality. Besides receiving numerous praises and awards, it was a commercial success. Its easy to think that Larian Studios wants to capitalize on its success and continue with the franchise, but the reality is different.

Since its launch, the role-playing video game has grown through updates that added quality-of-life improvements and addressed issues; one of the free patches expanded the epilogue.

However, fans wonder if there will be a more significant expansion. Last year, Tom Butler, product manager at Larian Studios, revealed that the company wanted to "do more" with Baldur’s Gate 3, although he made it clear that a DLC was not a priority.

Many months have passed since those statements, and the community still has the same question: Will Larian Studios work on a sequel or an expansion? There is already an answer, though it will likely disappoint many.

Larian Studios Wont Make Baldur’s Gate 4 or an Expansion

Despite the immense success of the 2023 RPG, the development studio plans to distance itself from the intellectual property to work on original projects. This was confirmed by the founder and director of the company, Swen Vincke, during a panel at the Game Developers Choice Awards (GDC).

Baldurs Gate 3 will always have a warm place in our hearts. We will always be proud of it, but we are not going to continue. We are not going to make new expansions, which is what everyone expects us to do. We are not going to make Baldurs Gate 4, which is what everyone expects us to do. We are going to move forward, we will step away from D&D, and we will start doing something new,” commented the creative.

What will be the future of Baldurs Gate?

Lets remember that the Baldur’s Gate series is part of the Dungeons & Dragons universe and as such belongs to Wizards of the Coast. Therefore, Larian Studios will distance itself from the franchise and let another company take the lead. These statements do not mean that the 3rd installment will stop receiving minor patches.

Michael Douse, publishing director at Larian Studios, took to his personal accounts to confirm the news. “Ive had a lot of time to reflect on this amazing adventure as everyone has, and I cannot explain how excited I am for whats next,” he commented.

Larian Studios will turn the page and do something new

In statements to GameSpot, Swen Vincke delved into the reason behind the decision to move away from the intellectual property and work on something different. “We werent made for that. Thats literally the opposite of what Larian is about; we want to do big, new things, we dont want to repeat what we did already,” he said.
