In the context of the announcement about changes in Xboxs business strategy, the number of subscribers to Xbox Game Pass was revealed, which is not a common occurrence as Microsoft usually does not share such figures in recent financial reports. However, doubts about the "growth" have quickly emerged.

Xbox Game Pass now has 34 million subscribers

During the announcement of the arrival of Diablo IV on Game Pass, Microsoft revealed that the service already has 34 million subscribers. The last time the company provided figures was in January 2022 when it reported having 25 million subscribers. Regarding this, Phil Spencer, Head of Microsoft Gaming, told journalist Stephen Totilo that these are all fully paid subscriptions, meaning they are not part of the $10, MXN, $1 USD promotion, something that the executive emphasized.

Of those 34 million, how many come from the transition from Live Gold to Xbox Game Pass Core?

Officially, Game Pass, on both Xbox and PC, has 34 million subscribers. However, some social media users quickly pointed out that last year saw the conversion of Xbox Live Gold accounts to Xbox Game Pass Core, so they are included in this figure.

In that regard, Phil Spencer mentioned that the impact of this conversion to Xbox Game Pass Core was minimal, and the increase in subscribers was related to PC users and those playing in the cloud.

Additionally, users on social media cited statements from Sarah Bond, who stated that 34 million Xbox Game Pass subscribers would be able to play Diablo IV. What does this have to do with it? Well, the Xbox Game Pass Core level does not include day-one exclusive releases, so theoretically, these more than 30 million service subscribers are in the standard or Ultimate mode.
