Recent sales data indicates that the physical market is losing ground to the digital model. With this in mind, its always appreciated when a company takes the trouble to release a disc version of their video games, even if its several months after the original launch.
When theres a lot of content or the projects scale is too large, studios find themselves needing to release physical copies that include 2 or more discs; this phenomenon has been observed multiple times over the years. Not too long ago, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the latest PlayStation 5 exclusive, adopted that format.
We knew that the physical version of Baldur’s Gate 3 for consoles would have at least 2 discs; however, Larian Studios hinted that the Xbox Series X version could double that amount.

Physical Version of Baldur’s Gate 3 Could Come on 4 Discs on Xbox Series X
In November 2023, the development studio announced that the acclaimed RPG will have a deluxe edition that includes a copy of the game, 32 stickers, the soundtrack, a collectible box, and other extras that will surely please hardcore fans. Still without an official release date, its expected to arrive early in 2024.
At that time, it was announced that the physical version for PlayStation 5 would come on 2 discs, while the Xbox Series X version would take up 3; however, theres a possibility that Microsofts next-gen console users might need 4 discs to play Baldur’s Gate 3.
This was announced by Michael Douse, publishing director of Larian Studios, in a social media post. "Apparently, the physical version of Baldur’s Gate 3 for Xbox will now have 4 discs. They could be 3. Its a very dynamic situation," commented the studio member through his personal account.
In statements to the Kotaku media, the Larian Studios member indicated that it will be at least 3 discs, but he hinted that it could be 4, which he labeled as a "fun problem." He explains that the goal is for the game to be fully playable without the need for any downloads.
"The plan is for it to be completely playable on the disc, so thats the reality we find ourselves in," said Michael Douse. In response to a fan, he reaffirmed that the physical version for PlayStation 5 will only come on 2 discs.
