Xbox’s Fable Reboot Might Not Arrive Until 2027

Fable was set to be a defining title for Xbox Series X|S. But five years after its reveal, development appears to be dragging

Xbox is navigating a turbulent period following studio layoffs and the cancellation of several high-profile projects. These setbacks have sparked concern about the future of anticipated titles, Fable chief among them. Developed by Playground Games, the RPG reboot has been in the works since at least 2020, and while it was originally expected to launch in 2025, Xbox officially delayed it to 2026 earlier this year.

While this type of setback often leads to more polished games, a new rumor suggests the wait might be even longer, and not due to any enhancements.

Insider Claims Fable May Slip Beyond 2026

During a recent episode of the XboxEra podcast, well-known insider Nick Baker revealed that multiple sources told him Fable might not be ready in time for its revised 2026 launch window. Instead, the game could be delayed to 2027.

“I’ve heard from two different people now that Fable may slip to 2027,” he said, adding that the delay wouldn’t necessarily be due to major issues, just that the game is “taking a bit longer than expected.”

So far, no other insiders or outlets have corroborated the 2027 claim, and Microsoft has not commented on a further delay. Officially, Fable is still scheduled to release in 2026.

Recent Xbox Cuts Add to Uncertainty

Fan anxiety has grown in the wake of Microsoft’s recent wave of cancellations, including the reboot of Perfect Dark and Rare’s new IP, Everwild. These decisions sent a clear message: even long-running projects aren’t safe from the chopping block.

Given that Playground Games is best known for its work on the Forza Horizon series—and has no prior experience developing RPGs—some fans are concerned the studio may be struggling to bring Fable to life. Add in the recent layoffs, and it’s easy to understand why confidence is wavering.

That said, there’s no indication Microsoft is considering cancelling the project. On the contrary, Xbox has continued to promote the title as a major release for this generation.

A Long Road for a Key Xbox Exclusive

Fable was first revealed in 2020, the same year the Xbox Series X|S launched. From the beginning, it was pitched as one of the console’s flagship exclusives. But nearly five years later, fans have only seen a couple of cinematic trailers. These previews have impressed visually, but haven’t offered much in terms of gameplay or systems.

Some players still wonder why Xbox chose to revive Fable, especially after the franchise’s later entries failed to meet expectations. But there’s no denying Playground Games is a talented studio, and expectations remain high despite the long silence.

While a potential 2027 launch is disappointing, it’s important to remember this is still a rumor. For now, the game remains slated for next year, and Xbox insists the wait will be worth it.
