Earlier this year, the case of Brendan Depa, a young man who repeatedly assaulted an assistant teacher because, according to reports, she took away his Nintendo Switch, came to light. This story is still unfolding, and now the alleged assailant has pleaded guilty to the charges against him.
On February 21, 2023, Brendan Depa, who was 17 years old at the time, attacked teacher Joan Naydich at Matanzas High School in Palm Coast, Florida. Security camera footage shows the student knocking down the teacher and repeatedly striking her on the ground, leaving her unconscious.
The young man was arrested and is currently in Flagler County Jail with a one million dollar bail. He is currently facing a first-degree felony charge of aggravated assault against a school staff member.
Up to 30 years in prison for the young man who assaulted the teacher and took away his Nintendo Switch
On Monday, October 30, Brendan Depa, who is now 18 years old and will be tried as an adult, did not contest the charges and pleaded guilty. He will be sentenced in January 2024 by Judge Terrence Perkins. According to reports, he could face a sentence of up to 30 years in prison.
Kurt Teifke, the young mans lawyer, stated that his client is autistic. The suspects family reportedly wanted to avoid a jail sentence and instead sought treatment and probation due to concerns about his condition. However, the court-appointed psychologist deemed the young man competent, so the trial could proceed.

Assistant teacher Joan Naydich, who suffered 2 broken ribs and multiple bruises as a result of the attack, refused to support a reduced sentence for the young man.
According to court documents, Brendan Depa has three other charges for minor assault offenses. The first occurred in March 2019, the second in April, and the third in June of the same year.
