Horror movies that bring unique “WTF moments” to the genre (Part I)

Por Sara Araujo el 18 de October de 2022

Any horror fan knows that any time of the year is perfect for a horror movie marathon. I had plenty of those back in college with my friends, and we stumbled upon the weirdest stuff. I haven’t been too active in my research nowadays, but back then, there was a variety of international gore and psychological horror movies that made it into my personal favorites. And if by any chance you are into horror movies, particularly the ones that have weird twists and turns, you probably have already watched the films I will mention next. Let me know what you think of them if this is the case! And if you haven’t watched them all, I highly recommend doing so.

Excision (2012)

Have you ever heard about a blood fetish? Well, get ready for it because this film goes full-on with the blood, not necessarily in the slasher way we are used to watching horror movies. There are gory scenes, sure, but they come with a psychosexual twist that will leave you saying, “WTF.” The film is a feature-length adaptation of the 2008 short film of the same name. Check out the short film here; maybe this will convince you to watch the full-length version!

Antiviral (2012)

Fortunately, this movie came out before Corona shortly after Influenza. Nevertheless, suppose there are viruses and other pathogens from celebrities who fall ill, which are sold to clients who desire a connection with them. And the business grows insanely fast, to the point that you have to test the viruses on yourself. Well, this is just a little taste of Antiviral and its incredibly bright movie (literally, it’s all white rooms and enlighted spaces.) Not subtle and incredibly disturbing.

Raw (2016)

This movie was a Netflix discovery that caught my eye. However, when I looked for a reference online, the media described it as a movie that was so raw (literally) that people passed out while watching it. It is known that this is a used-up marketing technique to create morbidity, curiosity, and fear before even watching a movie, but it hasn’t worked on me so far. Nevertheless, the film differs from other gory proposals; in my opinion, the blood wasn’t the worst part. However, there is a hair scene where I’m starting to feel sick just by thinking of it…

Martyrs (2008)

This movie will make you want to say "Lars Von, who?" Nah, just kidding. But let me tell you that French horror movies have always been among my favorites. Something about those films takes the horror and the WTF moments to another level. And this is an excellent example of it. Imagine there is an underground project that aims to find how Biblical martyrs could’ve been like if they existed and in which conditions you could turn into one.

Funny Games (2007)

A remake brought ten years after the original came out, but it still delivers the WTF moment we need. Highly satirical, brutal, and, all in all, bloody. I think the horror/comedy duo hasn’t been explored enough (cough, cough, Jordan Peele), but here is an excellent example. This film undoubtedly marked a before and after in various current content elements, including She-Hulk.

A L’interieur (2007)

My personal favorite of all time. And obviously, a French movie. An American remake came out not long ago, but do yourself a favor and don’t watch it. It has the same story but with unnecessary dialogue that kills the mood of the original version. After a terrible car crash, a woman loses her husband and is left with her baby alone for the Holidays. Little she knows that the accident left another survivor who lost her baby and will seek revenge. Super gruesome and filled with WTF moments.

There are many movies I could introduce you to that will leave you feeling mindf*cked. If you want to find out about them, let me know so I can keep on writing them in upcoming features!
