The clichés, the uncommon, and the unexpected: jump scares in horror games

Por Sara Araujo el 27 de September de 2022

As hardcore horror fans, we know that jump scares are probably the oldest and the most used resource in movies and video games. Don’t get me wrong, as used-up as they are I absolutely love them. From an entertaining perspective, they’re actually fun and keep you on the edge of your seat, putting to test your awareness and sense of awe.

Though they are not for everyone; not every horror fan makes the most of them. Some people even consider them a boring cliché. But today, I’m proving them wrong by compiling all the top jump scares we know (and love.)

Some of these videos mention essential games every fan must know and play at least once. Resident Evil, SIlent Hill, Dead Space, and Evil Within are just a few. Maybe these gameplays will lure you into your next favorite horror title!

But, let’s be honest here. Not all jump scares come from horror games. Not all of them comply with the cliché we have felt before. There is also a category of jump scares found in games that aren’t part of the genre. I particularly love these scary elements on non-scary stories because they are entirely unexpected and spice up the game a little bit.

And talking about unexpected jump scares, this compilation is excellent because it actually breaks the myth of the cliché. Even though they might not be the scariest and may not cause a heart attack, they are a refined touch to certain parts of the story that might feel tedious or monotonous.

And last but not least, the cherry on top of jump scares and horror games. All. The. Screaming.

Someday I’ll be brave enough to stream and share some screams with the internet, but in the meantime, let’s have fun watching others do so. Some of my favorite streaming elements are reactions. They turn the content into a relatable virtual interaction.

When reactions are combined with horror games, entertainment is guaranteed. And talking about jump scares, beware. The screaming gets so intense you should lower the volume on your headphones (trust me.)

I hope you enjoyed this compilation and, hopefully, got spooked too!
