What happened with Linus Tech Tips? The controversy of the gigantic YouTube channel explained

Linus Media Group was recently accused of errors, lack of ethics, and an unhealthy work environment

Linus Tech Tips is one of the largest channels on YouTube. Every day, this technology channel surprises with a new video, and it's normal to see that most of them easily surpass a million views. It has a successful formula, and there's no doubt about that. However, in recent days, this channel became embroiled in a massive controversy.

But, what happened? It all started in late July when an employee of Linus Tech Tips stated in a video that, unlike other channels like Gamers Nexus or Hardware Unboxed, they start from scratch every time they need to make a new video. These statements were poorly received by the mentioned channels, which responded.

While Hardware Unboxed limited itself to posting a tweet, Gamers Nexus responded with a 45-minute video that was released on August 14th. In the video, they not only criticized the statements of the Linus Tech Tips employee but also uncovered that Linus Media Group had been making several significant errors. This was a result of their attempt to release a lot of content to stay relevant to the algorithm.

Among the errors Gamers Nexus found were informative details that were, at best, fixed with asterisks or in the comments. The problem with this is that, in some cases, the misinformation caused the product not to be represented properly in the review. This led many to believe that the course of action Linus Media Group should have taken was to remove the original video and upload a corrected version that shows the product being reviewed as it should be.

For example, recently Linus Media Group released a video about a prototype of a water cooler made of bronze. The problem with the video was that the prototype was tested on a GPU for which it wasn't designed, resulting in poor performance and criticism of the product. Additionally, Gamers Nexus accused Linus Tech Tips of selling this prototype instead of returning it, as they had supposedly agreed. This prompted a response from Linus Sebastian, the channel's founder, who claimed that he actually auctioned the prototype to raise funds for charity. However, he did this without permission from the prototype's owners.

In summary: Linus Media Group was accused of publishing inaccurate material by not giving enough time for their writers, producers, and editors to create the content. Furthermore, the company was also accused of unethical practices, but that's not all. In fact, they also faced criticism for fostering a toxic work environment.

Madison Reeve, a YouTuber and former social media coordinator for Linus Tech Tips, posted a Twitter thread acknowledging that she had a terrible work experience at the company. This was due to experiencing sexual harassment and workplace harassment. When she reported it, she was simply told to stop causing drama and to stay silent.

"My time at this company took my mental health to its lowest point. You could talk to anyone who was around me during my time working here, and they will confirm it," she said. "Some of you don't understand the mental anguish and nights of crying, feeling like I did something wrong and ruined my life, that I've had to go through".

Linus Media Group's Response to the Accusations

In response to this situation, Linus Media Group halted the production of all their content to release a YouTube video. In it, several members of the leadership team addressed the issues, acknowledging their existence and giving their stance. Additionally, it was confirmed that the channel will not produce new content in the coming weeks in order to have time to address their problems and improve their processes.

Regarding Madison Reeve's case, Terren Tong, the CEO of Linus Media Group, confirmed that they will send an investigator to review the accusations. This will inform their decisions moving forward. Sebastian, for his part, expressed shock, as he believes what was said goes against their internal processes.

"I was genuinely shocked to read these allegations. They are simply not consistent with my memories. They are not consistent with our internal processes. They are not consistent with our company's values.

We take pride in maintaining a safe and inclusive environment. In addition to our existing reporting systems (both anonymous and otherwise), we have proactively reached out internally to encourage team members to report any workplace harassment or bullying they may be experiencing, so we can take swift and decisive action.

Our HR team will conduct a more thorough assessment of the allegations, and when we are ready, we will issue a more comprehensive statement. For now, I ask that you grant our team the time it needs to be as thorough as possible."

We will keep an eye on this situation and inform you if there are any developments.
