It seemed that 2024 would be unable to match it, but in recent weeks, exciting games were released that captivated fans. And yes, one of the upcoming releases has the necessary ingredients to be a Game of the Year (GOTY) candidate.
The year started off on the right foot, as from the first month, we could enjoy attractive releases that received very good ratings. The positive streak continues with the release of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, the second part of the highly anticipated remake of the classic JRPG from Square Enix.
Although the Japanese role-playing game won't hit stores until February 29, content creators and members of the press have already had the chance to play it. The first reviews have come out, and they are very positive, indicating that we are facing one of the best releases of the year.
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is already a contender for the 2024 GOTY
At this moment, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth holds an average score of 93 on Metacritic based on 118 reviews. While it is very likely that this rating will increase or decrease as more media share their verdict, it already has the "Must Play" seal of approval.
The new adventure of Cloud, Tifa Lockhart, Aerith Gainsborough, and Barret Wallace becomes the highest-rated game of 2024 to date, surpassing TEKKEN 8, Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, Persona 3 Reload, and the controversial remaster of The Last of Us: Part II.
Likewise, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is the franchise's second-highest-rated title in Metacritic history, only behind Final Fantasy IX from 2000. This means it is the highest-rated title in the IP in 24 years.
Finally, the JRPG directed by Naoki Hamaguchi debuted with an average rating of 94 on OpenCritic and dethroned Balatro, the popular indie title priced at $15 USD that received widespread acclaim since the release of its demo in the last Steam Next Fest.
