Microsoft's gaming business has evolved and broken barriers with its own gaming ecosystem. Then, it ventured into releasing once-exclusive titles on competing platforms like PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch. Is this the future of Xbox? It certainly seems so, as the results are coming in, and Satya Nadella is pleased with what has been achieved so far.

During the presentation of the financial report for the third quarter of fiscal year 2023, Satya Nadella, CEO of Microsoft, spoke about the favorable results of the gaming business, except in the case of console sales. Initially, the executive stated that their goal is to reach gamers no matter where they are: "We are committed to meeting players where they are and delivering excellent games to more people on more devices. We set records in the third quarter for game streaming hours, console usage, and monthly active devices."

Subsequently, Satya Nadella highlighted the recent results of Microsoft's acquisitions in gaming as, thanks to the purchase of Bethesda and Activision Blizzard, they have a greater presence on other platforms as a publisher: "Finally, we are expanding our games to new platforms, bringing 4 of our fan-favorite games to Nintendo Switch and Sony PlayStation for the first time. In fact, earlier this month, we had 7 games among the top 25 on the PlayStation Store, more than any other publisher."

In late 2023 and early 2024, there was controversy between Microsoft and Xbox because Satya Nadella publicly announced the company's intentions to release Xbox Game Studios games on PlayStation and Nintendo, a multiplatform strategy. On the other hand, Phil Spencer, head of Microsoft Gaming, stated that there were no such plans, but his statement fell apart when Xbox had to hold a special event where they presented the first 4 video games that would be released on competing consoles.
