Despite being around for nearly two decades, God of War remains one of PlayStation’s most beloved and iconic franchises. The most recent entry, released in 2022, marked a natural evolution of the 2018 reboot, offering a more mature narrative with a third-person perspective and deeper themes like fatherhood and grief.

Whispers of a new game are growing louder, with some suggesting an official reveal is imminent. But if you’re expecting a grand, god-tier sequel—you may want to brace yourself.

Kratos might return to Ancient Greece, but not as you expect

Initial leaks hinted that the next God of War would expand the franchise’s mythological scope even further and be set in ancient Egypt. The idea stirred excitement amongst longtime fans, who were hoping to see Kratos take on the deities of that region.

More recent reports, however, suggest that the next installment could go back to its roots, revisiting Ancient Greece—the setting of the original trilogy, its prequel, and the spin-offs released on PSP. But rather than a return to large-scale, 3D action, the game is said to be a 2.5D metroidvania.

Insider Gaming‘s Tom Henderson first mentioned the project in response to questions on social media, and Jeff Grubb from Giant Bomb later corroborated the rumors, reinforcing the idea that a smaller, side-scrolling spin-off, similar to Ubisoft’s Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, may be in the works.

Back in March, Grubb had already warned fans to manage their expectations, saying the next game would likely be a “side story” rather than a mainline entry.

This shift in style might be a letdown for players that aren’t into platformers, but it could still be a fa fresh take on the franchise. We’ll have to wait and see if the rumors are true, maybe even during this week’s State of Play.

What about the remastered trilogy?

Alongside the spin-off speculation, fans have also revisited rumors of a remastered God of War collection. Supposedly in development for PlayStation 5, this bundle would bring the original trilogy back with modern graphics and performance upgrades.

Despite previous insider reports suggesting news was imminent—perhaps as part of the franchise’s 20th anniversary—no formal announcement has materialized so far.

Would you be open to a 2.5D metroidvania featuring Kratos? Or are you still hoping for a full-scale sequel? Let us know what you think.
