Laid-Off GTA VI Developers Urge Fans Not to Boycott Rockstar’s Next Game, Making an Important Plea to the Franchise’s Community
By Daniel Laguna onUnion asks players to enjoy the title while keeping the labor struggle in mind.

Grand Theft Auto VI has not been released, but it has already found itself at the center of multiple controversies. Among the most persistent is a dispute involving Rockstar Games and its parent company, Take-Two, over the dismissal of more than 30 developers who contributed to the highly anticipated sequel.
The Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain (IWGB) and the affected creative professionals continue to push back, alleging that the companies engaged in anti-union practices. The conflict has now escalated to the point of drawing scrutiny from government bodies, which are closely monitoring the famed GTA studio.
With GTA VI caught in the crossfire, a segment of the player community has discussed boycotting its release in solidarity with the IWGB’s cause. In an unexpected turn, however, both the union and the laid-off employees have released a video delivering a counterintuitive message: they are asking fans not to boycott the game and instead to enjoy it when it launches.

Union Asks Fans Not to Boycott GTA VI
As Rockstar Games fine-tunes the final details of GTA VI, it is also working to contain the fallout from the layoff controversy and prevent it from derailing the release or escalating into a broader legal crisis. The studio is scheduled to meet with authorities between September 10 and October 15, when a series of hearings will take place to determine the outcome of the dispute.
Rockstar has denied any wrongdoing, maintaining that the dismissals were justified by employees leaking confidential information about GTA VI. The IWGB rejects this explanation and has mounted a campaign to intensify pressure on the developer while drawing greater official attention to the case.
Some players, in a show of solidarity with the workers, have expressed willingness to skip playing GTA VI at launch as a form of protest. Yet pre-order figures suggest that this movement has not dampened demand, with early sales already breaking records for both Rockstar and Take-Two.
However, the union itself has now called for an end to any boycott efforts aimed at undermining the game’s highly anticipated debut on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The IWGB maintains that fans should be able to enjoy the release, arguing that there are more effective ways to voice discontent over labor practices without penalizing players.
The laid-off developers agree with the union, emphasizing that they do not wish to see audiences miss out on a project they poured years of passion and effort into creating.
“We poured years of our lives into helping build this game. We don’t want you to boycott it. We want you to help us fight for justice,” said Jack Hoxby, one of the affected workers.

Fired Workers Keep Fighting and Are Asking the Community for Help
The former employees’ plea arrives just days before Rockstar is set to offer an extended preview of GTA VI via Netflix, fueling considerable discussion across social media. Some fans have expressed confusion over the union’s stance, with many believing that a boycott makes more sense.
Nevertheless, the IWGB has reiterated that its broader fight remains very much active and that it will continue applying pressure on Rockstar following the layoffs. To that end, the union has made a specific request to supporters who wish to contribute without resorting to a boycott.
“Buy one of our T-shirts. You’ll be helping to win justice for us and to defend the right of workers everywhere to come together and unionise. That way, when GTA 6 comes out in November, you can enjoy it knowing that you had the backs of the people who made it,” the union said.
Proceeds from the shirt sales will be split between direct support for the affected developers and funding for the ongoing legal challenge against Rockstar Games.
