In any industry, awards will always generate controversy among the public. Lets be honest: we all know in advance that if our favorites win, well be very happy, but if they lose, there will be some who dont react the best way (we hope that’s not your case). Maybe rightly so, maybe not. Of course, The Game Awards are no exception.
Each award has its processes for choosing the nominees and the winners. In the case of those organized by the journalist and host Geoff Keighley, fans are invited to vote for their favorites in each category. But heres the question: is the community vote really important to decide the Game of The Year (GOTY) and the rest of the winners?

Spoiler alert: not really
As mentioned at the beginning, at the end of every awards ceremony, we see some happy and others upset with the results. As Thanos himself, it seems to be "inevitable. However, maybe the feeling of anger or frustration would be less if you knew from the beginning that the fans’ vote has an extremely low impact on the final decision on who wins the statuette.

As we can see on the FAQ located on the official page of The Game Awards, the vote of the people only represents 10% of the total, with 90% coming from the voting jury:
Winners are determined by a blended vote between the voting jury (90%) and public fan voting (10%). Fans can vote for their favorite games on TheGameAwards.com and on our Discord server. In China, fans can vote on the winners via Bilibili. Fan voting closes on Wednesday, December 7 at 6 pm PT.”
So now you know. Although its easy to get carried away by the trends of social networks while we see hashtags supporting one of the nominees with so much passion, and think that it is impossible "that game" wasnt the winner, remember: In the most extreme and rare case scenario, all the buzz in favor of one game you see on the internet represents only 10% of the votes.
In case you missed it: 15 games nominated for The Game Awards that you can play now on Game Pass!
That being said, we do not take away your intention to vote. Actually, we invite you to do it, and here we tell you the process to choose your favorites in each category. Remember that it doesnt matter if your game wins or losses a category; the fact that you played and enjoyed it is the most important thing.
At the end of the day, a lot of hype for The Game Awards, and the main reason most people watch them, is because of the game trailers. Arent you just excited about seeing some new footage for "that game" youve been waiting for so long? And of course, Im sure youre also more than ready to hear the expression "World Premiere" a few times.
