Devil May Cry: Everything You Need to Know About the Ambitious Netflix Anime

The TV show is now official and will try to excite fans of the Capcom franchise.

For over 20 years, the Devil May Cry franchise has captivated fans. Now, it is gearing up to reach new heights with a new animated series coming to Netflix. When will it debut? What can we expect? Below, we'll cover everything we know so far about this production.

What is Devil May Cry?

For those unfamiliar, Devil May Cry is a franchise that originated at the beginning of the millennium, created by Hideki Kamiya, Shinji Mikami, and other Japanese creatives. The first installment debuted in 2001 on the PlayStation 2 and immediately became a cult classic thanks to its hack-and-slash action.

According to reports, the first title in this IP, starring Dante, exceeded 2 million copies sold. Its success motivated Capcom to greenlight the production of sequels and spin-off projects.

The franchise consists of a total of 6 video games: Devil May Cry, Devil May Cry 2, Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening, Devil May Cry 4, DmC: Devil May Cry, and Devil May Cry 5. It's currently a mystery if the creators are already working on a new iteration of Dante's adventures.

Who is behind the new Devil May Cry anime?

The new TV show was announced at the end of 2018, but we had to wait until mid-2023 to see it in action and learn the first official details.

According to the information, the show inspired by Capcom's legendary saga is the work of Studio Mir, a prestigious South Korean animation studio that previously worked on high-profile productions such as The Legend of Korra, DOTA: Dragon's Blood, Young Justice: Outsiders, and The Boondocks.

The anime's producer is Adi Shankar, who also worked on the adaptation of Castlevania for Netflix. On the other hand, the writer is Alex Larsen, the writer of the animated series Yasuke and the film Bodied.

In an interview with IGN Japan in 2021, it was revealed that Hiroyuki Kobayashi, a veteran producer who participated in the development of the franchise's original installments, is also collaborating on the project.

"The entire team, both executive and creative, is incredibly kind and has supported us. Kobayashi-san is wonderful. It's a real pleasure to work with Capcom. Their character library is unlike anything that has been assembled," said Adi Shankar.

When will the Devil May Cry animated series premiere on Netflix?

Unfortunately, the official announcement did not reveal the release date for this ambitious production. As of writing this article, we only know that the anime will come to Netflix in the future.

We will stay tuned and share more information when it becomes available.

How many seasons will the Devil May Cry anime have?

Fortunately, fans will have Dante for a while. This is because the TV show will consist of a total of 8 episodes of an unknown duration. The good news is that the creators have already confirmed that the story will continue, as they have planned an arc that will unfold over "several seasons."

However, it's possible that the Netflix-based anime will need to be successful for Netflix to greenlight the production of new episodes.

It seems that animation will be one of the strengths of this adaptation.

What will be the story of the animated series?

The teaser shared by the streaming giant is very brief regarding details about the plot.

However, producer Adi Shankar revealed in the conversation with IGN Japan that Vergil, Lady, and, of course, Dante will be characters appearing in the first season of the animated series. Judging by the promotional images and the youthful look of the protagonist, the plot might be inspired by Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening from 2005.

"Sinister forces are at play to open the portal between the human and demonic realms. In the midst of all this is Dante, an orphan demon hunter for hire, unaware that the fate of both worlds hangs from his neck," reads the official description.
