Final Fantasy VII Rebirth Sales Falter in Japan

The second installment is selling less than the first at its launch

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is one of the most significant releases of the year. However, the PlayStation exclusive seems to be underperforming, as evidenced by the game's sales in Japan.

According to sales figures from Famitsu (via Gematsu), Square Enix's new game went from selling 262,656 units in its debut week to only 24,482 copies in its second week on the market.

What's particularly striking is that the second part of the remake trilogy sold very little, especially when considering that the original release debuted with over 700,000 copies sold in its launch week (3 days) and 70,000 copies in the following week.

It's important to consider the circumstances surrounding both releases, such as the fact that these figures only account for physical copies, and that the PlayStation 5 has a model that only works with digital game copies. Additionally, Final Fantasy VII Remake was released in the latter stages of the PlayStation 4's lifecycle when there was a larger player base compared to the PlayStation 5 (3.5 years on the market).

Unicorn Overlord Tops the Sales Chart in Japan

This drop in sales led to its fall from the top spot, which was taken over by Unicorn Overlord, the new title from Japanese studio Vanillaware, which had a modest debut with just over 74,000 units sold across all its versions (PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch).

These are good news for Vanillaware, as although the numbers might seem low for any AAA production, it's a good amount for the studio. To put it in perspective, their previous title debuted in December 2019 selling 34,608 copies in Japan (only on PlayStation 4).

In this instance, circumstances favored Vanillaware's title, as the sales figures were enough to place it at the top of the podium, even surpassing Hatsune Miku and her boxing game.
