Dave Bautista Takes Over as Kratos in Amazon’s ‘God of War’ Series Following Ryan Hurst’s Exit
The former WWE star and ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ actor will now lead the adaptation across 2 seasons already greenlit by Amazon Prime.

Dave Bautista, one of the most frequently fan-cast actors in the gaming community, has long been regarded by enthusiasts as a perfect fit for adaptations of video game characters, thanks to his imposing physique and screen presence.
That wish is now becoming a reality as, after a difficult stretch in production that led to the departure of original lead Ryan Hurst, Amazon Prime’s live-action God of War series has found its new Kratos.
Dave Bautista to Play Kratos on TV’s Adaptation of God of War
According to an exclusive report from Variety, WWE champion Dave Bautista has officially been cast to play Kratos in Amazon Prime’s TV adaptation of God of War.
The production ran into trouble when Ryan Hurst, who had already been cast in the lead role, sustained an injury that ultimately prevented him from continuing.
Production teams moved quickly to find a replacement, and Bautista’s name once again rose to the top of the shortlist. Interestingly, insiders note that Bautista had been a serious contender for the part even before Hurst was originally chosen, making his eventual casting feel almost inevitable.

Dave Bautista and Kratos, A Role Chosen By Fate
While the announcement itself may not come as a shock to those following the project, the circumstances surrounding it are certainly noteworthy. Earlier reports had already indicated that producers initially viewed Bautista as the ideal candidate for Kratos.
Hurst ultimately won them over with his performance, but his injury forced a change of plans, opening the door for Bautista to step in.
It has also been confirmed that four episodes had already been filmed with Hurst in the role, but those will not be used. Instead, the production will reshoot those installments entirely with Bautista as the lead, ensuring creative consistency across the series.
Amazon Prime has already committed to 2 seasons of the live-action God of War, with the narrative drawing from the franchise’s Norse mythology arc in which Callum Vinson will play Atreus.
