Marvel’s Wolverine Director Responds to Negative Comments, Says Fans Will Always Find ‘Stuff to Complain About’ Even If the Game is Good
By Ulises Contreras onMike Daly acknowledges that a vocal fanbase is ultimately a “good problem” for the studio to have.

After remaining largely under wraps since its initial reveal back in 2021, Marvel’s Wolverine has finally resurfaced and with its long-awaited launch drawing nearer, public discourse around the title has grown increasingly heated.
Recent trailers and previews have polarized the community, with complaints ranging from the perceived linearity of mission design to the visual portrayal of certain characters. Despite this, game director Mike Daly is not worried about negative backlash.

The Controversies Surrounding Marvel’s Wolverine
Over the past several weeks, Insomniac Games has revealed much of Wolverine’s gameplay systems and narrative direction through official trailers and press previews. Yet even as excitement runs high, fan reactions have been mixed.
A notable point of contention has been footage showcasing heavily scripted, corridor-like sequences in which Logan proceeds with minimal player input. Detractors have been quick to label the project a “movie-game” that could ostensibly be played one-handed.
People also criticized a battle against a giant Sentinel, while another faction of the fanbase has taken issue with the character designs for Mystique and other returning figures. Such pushback is hardly the kind of reception any studio hopes for.
In addition, Marvel’s Wolverine has also found itself swept into the broader industry debate surrounding the end of physical media. Although the PS5 title will indeed ship on disc and remain fully playable off-line without a patch, comment sections across official channels have been flooded with grievances related to that very topic.
Earlier this week, Insomniac’s communications and marketing director, James Stevenson, addressed the wave of negativity in a public statement, observing that social media algorithms tend to amplify and reward outrage.
“It’s an unrelenting barrage that I don’t believe is healthy for anyone’s mental state, nor is it truly representative,” Stevenson remarked at the time.

Marvel’s Wolverine Director Is “Pretty Used” to Fan Backlash
In a new interview with The Gamer, Marvel’s Wolverine Director Mike Daly has weighed in once again regarding the criticism, saying he is quite used to such reaction.
He admitted that the team has grown “pretty used to” fan backlash over the years, and that it is a “good problem” for the studio to have. He compared it to Insomniac’s own Marvel’s Spider-Man trilogy, which faced its own share of controversy upon release.
These games were criticized due to the redesign of supporting characters, the inclusion of Mary Jane stealth segments, and divisive narrative twists. Mike Daly explained that Insomniac Games can make a “great game that a lot of people love” but some will still “find stuff to complain about”.
“And I rest easy about this, knowing that our goal for the game wasn’t necessarily to accomplish these things that people complain about. Our goal really was to focus completely on making the best game for the character,” he said.
